  1. Belize - Consular Information Sheet

  4. Country Description:  Belize is a developing country.  Its tourism
  5. facilities vary in quality.
  6.  
  7. Entry Requirements:  A passport, a return/onward ticket, and sufficient
  8. funds are required for travel to Belize.  U. S. citizens who stay less than
  9. three months do not need visas.  However, for visits exceeding one month,
  10. travelers must obtain permits from immigration authorities in Belize.  For
  11. further information, travelers may contact the Embassy of Belize at 2535
  12. Massachusetts Avenue N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008, tel. (202) 332-9636, the
  13. Belize Consulate in Miami, or the Belize Mission to the U.N. in New York.

  15. Medical Facilities:  Medical care is limited.  Doctors and hospitals often
  16. expect immediate cash payment for health services.  U.S. medical insurance
  17. is not always valid outside the United States.  In some cases, supplemental
  18. medical insurance with specific overseas coverage has proved useful.  For
  19. additional health information, the traveler can contact the Centers for
  20. Disease Control's international travelers hotline at (404) 332-4559.

  22. Crime Information:  Petty crime, including pickpocketing and muggings,
  23. occurs.  Visitors who walk alone on city streets, especially at night, or
  24. travel alone to a remote tourist site, are particularly at risk.  The loss
  25. or theft of a U.S. passport should be reported immediately to the local
  26. police and the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.  Useful information on
  27. guarding valuables and protecting personal security while traveling abroad
  28. is provided in the Department of State pamphlet "A Safe Trip Abroad."  This
  29. publication, as well as others, such as "Tips for Travelers to Central and
  30. South America," are available from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S.
  31. Government Printing Office, Washington D.C. 20402.

  33. Drug Penalties:  U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in
  34. which they are traveling.  Penalties in Belize for possession and
  35. trafficking in drugs are strict, and convicted offenders can expect jail
  36. sentences and fines.

  38. Civil Aviation Oversight:  In August 1991, the U.S. Federal Aviation
  39. Administration assessed Belize's civil aviation authority as not in
  40. compliance with international aviation safety oversight standards for
  41. Belize's carriers operating to and from the U.S.  Typically, the same level
  42. of safety oversight is applied to operations to other destinations.  For

  46. Registration:  Americans who register at the Consular Section of the U.S.
  47. Embassy in Belize City may obtain updated information on travel and security
  48. within Belize.
